In 2001 Harry and I biked to Zermatt in Switzerland, originally to climb Matterhorn, but after a heavy snowstorm we had to adjust our goals to some easier peaks. We updated our website daily with a short story and a few pictures (see
http://www.7summits.com/matterhorn/), using an iPaq and a Palm III with an IR connection to a Nokia phone.
For his Chogolisa trip, I supplied Harry with a Fujitsu Siemens Pocket Loox 600. It's not the prettiest of all PDAs, but with a backup battery, both SD and CF slots and a foldable keyboard it's a quite suitable tool for a trip like this.
The Thuraya satellite phone that Harry brought with him does not support IR, so we had to find a serial cable for the Loox. Unfortunately they are very poorly available. The best we could have delivered in time was a serial sync cable, so I made Harry a male-male crossover cable, but he hasn't managed to get it working yet.
So, anyone out there with a clue what might be missing?
