Personal resume:

Ulrike Kiefer, 57, is an electrical engineer from Germany. She immigrated to South Africa in 1968. A mother of two sons, she has five grandchildren and runs her own business in electrical engineering. And, she still finds time to go out climbing or white water rafting every weekend.

Rock climbing since 1983, she climbed and opened routes in most areas of South Africa and ascended all of the better-known peaks in the Drakensberg. But her love for higher mountains and for exploring unknown areas soon took her to foreign mountain ranges.

She has taken part and led numerous expeditions throughout Africa and South America and this will be her fifth to Asia. She summited Mt Kenya by the ice-window route, Kilimanjaro by the Umbwe route, all four major peaks in the Ruwenzories, various peaks in Bolivia, Peru and Patagonia, Elbrus and others in the Caucasus, Pik Lenin (7134m) and Khan Tengri (7010m). The expedition she led in 1994 to Pik Lenin in the Pamirs was the first all South African expedition to climb above 7000m. In 1998 she led another expedition to climb Khan Tengri, a technical peak of 7010m in the Tien Shan, another South African first. In 1999 she took part in an expedition to Ama Dablam (6856m) in the Himalayas and participated in the successful rescue of a fellow climber who had been overcome by acute mountain sickness. Also active on the organizational side of the Johannesburg Section of the MCSA, she has held the portfolios of Expedition and Clubhouse committee member, for a number of years.

Robert Name: Robert Zipplies
Age: 36
Nationality: South African/German, living in Capetown, SA
Climbing resume:

Some of my earliest memories were of the outdoors and this has progressively transformed into a passion for outdoor activities in remote places. In 1994, when climbing Kilimanjaro, I discovered my love for higher mountains – I seem to get a kick out of being in remote challenging environments and being entirely reliant on myself. Trips to Chamonix (Mont Blanc), Aconcagua and the High Tatras followed.

In 1997 I discovered another passion, rock climbing, and have since then climbed extensively in South Africa as well as in Spain, the UK, and Thailand.

Personal resume:

I am a bit of a jack of all trades: after reluctantly doing some time as an engineer, I got out of that by doing an MBA. Since then I have worked in a variety of business settings and industries, and now work as a freelance business consultant in the business sustainability and technology venture capital fields.

When not in the mountains, I am probably happiest reading, doing yoga or just being.
