Questions on Contacts in High Places
« on: Nov 11 2005, 12:34 »

I'm heading to Kilimanjaro shortly and thought I was all prepared, but I just heard reports of people having troubles with contact lenses at altitude.  Namely, not enough oxygen getting to the eye=lenses have to be changed for glasses.  Anyone have news/experience with this? I really hoped to wear my contacts instead of glasses!

Hi Dharma  8)

Please see this older topic about contact lenses at altitude.

Kili's altitude should not be a problem for wearing contacts, though it might be harder to get the contacts out and clean.

Cheers,
Harry

I wore my contacts on Denali on summit day (from 14,000 camp - so long day) and had no problems (extemely cold).  A guy on the team did not wear contacts and his eye froze.

I wore my contacts on Everest on summit day and did not have problems until the very end, after the long day.  the problem was probably due more to lack of sleep.  I brought a pair a day for the last 4 days, to make sure I had enough.  I was worried about the glasses, goggles, oxygen mask fogging combo.

main thing is they will freeze so put them inside your pocket when it matters.

Thanks for the good words! I'm glad I can keep them in the whole time, (ive got the night and day contacts).  I'm just dying to get up top!  This will be the first time I've gone beyond 16,000ft.  Take care!    - cyrus

To the top of Africa and no frozen contacts.  8) The night and day contacts were excellent, I left them in for my entire six week tour of Tanzania. Take care.
