A terrible tragedy occurred today on the icefall of the southeast route of Mt. Everest.

It is known that several teams of Sherpas had left base camp at around 5:30 am - some of whom were heading for camp 1 and some to camp 2.

A section of the icefall collapsed this morning at 7 am. The icefall is a steep section of the Khumbu glacier where there are lots of crevasses (which climbers use ladders to cross), huge towers and blocks of ice. It seems that one tower toppled, causing a domino effect by hitting another tower and then a portion of a large wall of ice came crashing down.

At approximately 10:30 am, it was confirmed that 3 Sherpas had died in this icefall accident and that 3 or 4 others were injured.

Thoughts go out to these brave and courageous men and their families.
