St. Petersburg's flag to be placed on Australia's highest peak
ST. PETERSBURG. March 5 (Interfax-Northwest) - St. Petersburg's flag will be brought to Kostyushko Mountain, Australia's highest point.
An expedition to the 2,228-meter peak will start on March 8. The team comprises six mountain climbers. Most of them are active members of Russia's Geographic Society, Viktor Serov, the expedition chief, told a press conference in St. Petersburg on Wednesday.

He said one of St. Petersburg's symbols will be delivered to Kostyushko as part of a project to plant the northern capital's flags on the highest peaks of all the continents, as well as the South and North Poles, in honor of the city's 300th jubilee.

The project got underway on the North Pole in 1999. In 2000, a flag was raised at the South Pole; in 2001 on Mt. Elbrus (Europe) and Aconcagua (South America). In the summer of 2002, St. Petersburg's standard was taken up Africa's highest mountain, Mount Kilimanjaro. [RU ASIA EUROPE EMRG LEI AU]
