Expeditions In Serious Trouble On K2
« on: Aug 3 2008, 18:07 »

There's a major drama unfolding on K2 at the moment. A massive serac collapse on summit day pulled away all the safety ropes at the crux part of the summit route (the Bottleneck) leaving a number of climbers stranded above it with one of them seriously injured. Rescue efforts underway. Ger McDonnell became the first Irishman to summit K2. His whereabouts are currently unknown... 3 Dutch climbers are also unaccounted for. All missing climbers are seasoned/experienced climbers. They are going into their 4th night in the death zone tonight. A Serbian climber who was behind the main summit group fell at the bottleneck on the way up and died.

Updates from the Norit (dutch/international team) website can be found here:

After a number of weeks, now that the dust has settlet, this is the most balanced article I've found. He seems to have researched a number of accounts of the disaster. I suppose we'll never really know EXACTLY what happend...
