British climber falls off Himalayan peak
« on: May 14 2003, 00:20 »

A 36-year-old British mountaineer has died after falling from a peak east of Mount Everest.
Michael Turner, a 36-year-old information technology consultant from Northampton, died while scaling the 7,129-metre Mount Baruntse in the Nepalese Himalayas.

The climber died after a rope snapped, the Nepalese Tourism Ministry said.

Mr Turner was part of an expedition team and his is the first death reported in the new Nepalese Himalayas climbing season.

Huge numbers of mountaineers are expected to head for the area this year to mark the 50th anniversary of the first climb of Mount Everest.
It is understood that Mr Turner's family have been informed.
