Polish climbers lost on Elbrus
« on: Aug 13 2003, 16:05 »

Emergency services in Russia's North Caucasus republic of Kabardino-Balkaria stepped up the search for eight Polish mountaineers who sent a distress message after they started up Mount Elbrus on Monday.
A duty officer at the Mount Elbrus rescue station told The Associated Press that a search was underway for eight Polish climbers who have been missing for three days, but did not give further details.

The Polish private television station TVN24 said the group sent a text message by mobile phone to the Polish embassy, saying they were in trouble and that the embassy advised them to stay put in hopes that rescuers could find them on the 5,642-meter (18,510-foot) mountain.
