Nepal considers age limit for Everest
« on: Mar 25 2002, 15:41 »

Interesting news from Ananova:

"Nepal considers age limit for Everest

Nepal's mountaineering authority wants to ban climbers 16 and younger from trying to scale Mount Everest.

Ganesh Raj Karki, government chief of the Department of Mountaineering, says the proposal needs to be approved by Cabinet before a new law is adopted.

Nepal is facing pressure from the mountaineering community to prevent young climbers risking their lives.

It comes a year after a 16-year-old Sherpa boy scaled the 8,850 meters peak just a few days after his birthday to become the youngest climber to conquer Mount Everest.

Temba Tsheri broke the record on his second attempt but only after losing five fingers to frostbite and nearly dying on his first.

In 1999, a 15-year-old Nepali boy, Arvin Timilsina, suffered snow blindness near the summit. He was rescued by Sherpa guides.

"We have been holding discussions with the climbers and officials to make climbing Everest safer. And that is why we think it is necessary to set an age limit," Ganesh Karki said.

Since Mount Everest was first conquered by New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, the mountain has been climbed more than 1,000 times. Authorities say 180 climbers have died on its unpredictable slopes.

Half a dozen teams will be attempting to scale the mountain this spring.

What do you think of this age limit? Is it good to prevent the Sherpa's to send their (too) young children to Everest, or is it everybody's own business and is it taking a way opportunities for them?
And maybe this will finally put a bottom limit to "who' the youngest 7 summiteer as well?

Thanks and keep climbing,
