LONDON - A British mountaineer died Tuesday while trying to climb Mount Everest, the Foreign Office said.

Tue Apr 30, 5:24 PM ET

Peter Legate, 38, a business manager from Lymington, England, died as a result of a fall on the world's highest mountain.

"We understand he fell on the Lhotse face while climbing between camps two and three," a Foreign Office spokesman said on customary condition of anonymity. "We are in touch with his next of kin and are ready to offer consular assistance."

The progress of Legate, who was raising money for local charities, was being closely followed by the British Broadcasting Corp.

Legate lost his footing while seeking to fix ropes and fell about 200 meters (655 feet) into a crevasse, the BBC quoted Nepal's Tourist Ministry as saying. He was part of a team of seven experienced mountaineers, including Hungarian and American climbers, the BBC said.

Over the past two years, Legate had climbed several of the world's toughest peaks in preparation for Everest: Mount McKinley in Alaska, Chamonix in France, and Ama Dablam, a 22,500 foot (6,818 meter) peak in the Himalayas, known as the Himalayan Matterhorn."
