Picture of 'Sir Ed' Hillary on Antarctica
« on: Dec 11 2004, 23:53 »

A friend of a friend of mine  8), Myrna Gary, works on Antarctica and just sent the following about meeting Sir Ed.

The big news of the season is that I was invited (along with 15 others from here) to attend a building-dedication ceremony and barbecue dinner at New Zealand' s Scott Base (a couple of miles from here) where Sir Edmund Hillary was the guest speaker and main celebrity (far outshining NZ's Secretary of State and other lesser dignitaries).  Sir Ed, as he prefers to be called, is 85 years old now and was here for more than a week with a full agenda.  There were a couple of reasons for his trip:  he took part in a memorial ceremony honoring the 279 people who perished on a sight seeing flight 25 years ago when the plane flew straight into Mr. Erebus.  Sir Ed had been manifested on that flight but got called away for something and his best buddy took his place.  At some point, Sir Ed's wife and daughter were killed in a plane crash in Nepal and later Sir Ed married his best friend's widow.  She didn't accompany him on this trip.

I attached a nice picture she shot of Sir ED, courtesy and copyright Myrna Gary
