Title: Americans will attempt to climb the unclimbed Fantasy Ridge on Everest this year
Post by: Cy Kaicener on Feb 6 2006, 18:42
This year some Americans and Russians will attempt to climb the unclimbed Fantasy Ridge on Everest. There are 18 different routes up Everest, and one of them - The West Ridge Direct Route and Hornbein Coulior has a 100% fatality rate.

The graphical map of the various Everest routes is certainly an eye-opener. I didnt know there are so many routes. Before this, I only know the SW route and the North route.

Just wondering if the American Buttress and Neverest Buttress routes are easier than the other routes, since one dont have to go through the Khumbu Icefall.

Anyone have tried those 2 routes?

:) A google search might give you some information. I just found out that Aconcagua has twice as many routes  http://www.aconcaguaexpeditions.com/ingles/3/las33variantes.htm

I remember reading about this attempt of Everest along the "Fantasy Ridge" on Everest News last spring.  I wish for this American team and anyone else who may still join them a safe and successful climb.  What a challenge to undertake!

It is amazing how many routes there are on Everest and Aconcagua.  Many more routes than I was aware of.  I was wondering if anyone has a link or info regarding ALL the possible routes on Kilimanjaro.  I am planning a 7 summits.com trip up Kili and I am looking for the route "less traveled".  I am not so concerned with technical difficulty as I have some rock climbing and mountaineering skills and I plan on taking some refresher courses.

The above pages were definitely not created for nothing!  I have been reviewing them for some time.  And I have a good sense of the mountain via these pages.  I had wanted to make sure that there were not any other options for routes on Kili (aside from the main 8 routes.)
For me "the journey is the destination".  I am looking for scenic beauty, wildlife and the road less traveled.  I've narrowed it down to 3 routes: Machame, Lemosho/Machame or Lemosho/Breach.
Harry...I was wondering...when you say that the Machame route is arguably the most scenic route on the mountain, are you referring to the lower section or upper?  In other words, if I chose the Lemosho/Machame route, will it include the scenic part of the Machame route you are referring to?
Also, the pix that MoT took http://7summits.com/forum/index.php?topic=682.0 showed beautiful glaciers taken at sunrise.  Can I assume this was the Western Breach route?
The answers to these questions will be my deciding factor.  Then it's off to "parters needed"!  I am very excited to be starting the actual planning of my Kili/Safari trip!
