Title: Another question about Kili!
Post by: m.c. reinhardt on May 16 2007, 12:12
Harry

The following comes from your FAQ:
"Eat only thoroughly cooked food or fruits and vegetables you have peeled yourself."

What about my porter who will be preparing my meals?

If you are concerned about your porter, give him a good scrub first and make sure you clean under his fingernails.

Seriously though dont get too hung up on the detailed hygiene of the porters as for most of the time they will be hidden away in a tent and you will have no idea what they are up to, except when they bring out copious amounts of lovely food.

However that all depends though upon which company you are going with.

Take some Lomotil with you just in case.

Hi MC,
I agree with Roger, do not worry too much. That part of the FAQ is about preventing eating fruit and vegetables that are washed in dirty water, which is no issue on the mountain.

In the past 9 years I have heard of only one client that had stomach issues, and it was not sure if he had it already before the trip.

Have fun :)

Hee hee hee! That was on Aconcagua wasn't it? You were the cook too! :-D Only slagging!

Seriously though - most veg you get on the mountain will be cooked anyway so don't worry about it!

And no, I was not the cook in Puente de Inca.. actually in January this year I had to stop my clients from eating the exact same thing in the same restaurant...

Thanks, guys! I wasn't at all worried; just wanted to know if I should peel my own fruits and vegetables as the FAQ stated. I plan to enjoy every moment of this adventure even the tough parts of the climb when I ask myself, "why am I doing this?" I am so looking forward to my time in Africa!
