Title: 15th Highest Mountain
Post by: trunl on Jun 3 2004, 03:40
does anybody know what the 15th highest mountain is? it would be the highest 7000er. i heard it was Gasherbrum III with an altitude of 7952. is this correct? the source (peakware.com) said they were unsure.

any additional information appreciated,
trunl

Hi Trunl,
it's a bit dependent what you count as mountain vs ranges/peaks.
See this list http://www.highalpex.com/Peaklist/top100.html

Quote
24 Manaslu East  7992 Nepal Himalaya
25 Gyachung Kang  7952 China - Nepal Himalaya

This means they count 23 mountains above 8000 (many subsidiary peaks). If you only count the main peaks then Manslu east will disappear as well, so then it will be Gyachung Kang?!?

So who'll be the first to climb the 23 highest peaks?

14 - Easy

23 - Not so easy

Oh, sorry did that say HIGHEST? I thought you said LOWEST  ;D

here ill post the quote from everestnews.com:

Carlos Carsolio: "To complete the 14 8,000ers one talks about reaching main summits of the fourteen mountains. These mountains have 21 independent summits of more than 8000 meters, and a considerable amount of antesummits (he considers an antesummit the central top of Shishapangma), if these are subsidiary summits then there are 22). That is to say, to be able to complete the fourteen, you must reach the highest point of each one. An interesting challenge for the generations of the future is to get to complete the 21 summits, one of them even remains unclimbed - the Mid Lhotse summit."
