Post by: 7summits on Dec 21 2004, 04:08
SEOUL, Dec 20 (Bernama) -- By reaching the peak of Vinson Massif in Antarctica, Oh Eun-sun has become the first South Korean woman to conquer the highest mountains on the seven continents of the world, Yonhap said in its report Monday.

The South Korean news agency said the 38-year-old mountaineer completed climbing the 4,897-meter mountain Monday.

"I am so happy to have made the achievement," she told Yonhap over a satellite phone. It is the 12th time for a woman to conquer the world's seven highest summits.

Besides Vinson Massif, the other highest summits are Everest in Asia, Aconcagua in South America, McKinley in North America, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Elbrus in Europe and Kosciusko in Australia.

Oh began her ascent of the Antarctic mountain last Thursday. She conquered the 5,633-meter Elbrus in 2002 and reached four other summits this year alone.
