Everest record Sherpa is arrested

Everest record-man Pemba Dorje Sherpa in jail

8 Hour Everest Record Claim Holder Pemba Dorje Sherpa Jailed http://americasroof.com/wp/archives/2006/02/18/8-hour-everest-record-claim-holder-pemba-dorje-sherpa-jailed/

Pemba's "record" as seen in the BBC news report was disputed by many Everest veterans and many Sherpa including Lhakpa Gelu who was the previous year's record claimer.

the dispute
Camp II is 2/5ths of the way to the summit, above Camp II on the day of Pemba's climb the weather was horrific thwarting all climbing parties including forcing many to retreat to Camp II, Pemba alleges he climbed though it all wearing light gear, and, sped up on the upper half of the mountain.

Facts:
No summit witnesses.
No self-taken summit photos.
No witnesses of him above Camp II (only 2/5ths of the way up the mountain).
In his descent, no witnesses until Camp II. No one saw him on the upper 3/5ths of the mountain.
He never announced his record attempt in advance to anyone.

This is not an isolated thing with the Sherpa and Everest record claims.

Pemba Dorji is still in jail. Arrested for direct involvement in a kidnapping crime where two people were kidnapped and a ransom demanded.

Pemba's Everest "record" was already heavily disputed and doubted and lacks any proof or evidence of BOTH his time and whether he reached the summit.
This criminal case speaks to his lack of honesty, apparent criminal nature, and apparent fradulent activity to obtain profit/money. His record-claim should be thrown out.

Pemba Dorji was offered $2500 by Dan Howitt and USA Mountain Speed Climbing in July 2004 to do another Everest speed ascent in 2005 or 2006 etc, that is fully timed by impartial official timers. Pemba never responded, never did another speed ascent.

Perhaps its wrong to offer people money to risk their lives just to set a record?
