Additional InfoThere are 14 eight thousand meters high mountains one the globe. Up till now 7 of them were climbed during winter. All first winter accents were made by Polish climbers.

But probably the most famous one is the climbing on 17 february 1980 of Everest by Leszek Cichy and Krzysztof Wielicki. This Polish national expedition was led by Andrzej Zawada.
Andrzej Zawada originated the idea of climbing Mount Everest in winter. Due to his initiative and pain the Nepalese Authorities had to establish new rules to climb in the Himalayas in winter, giving the first permission to the Polish Everest Winter Expedition for the 1979-80 season.

Award:
The Wieliczka Salt Mine is used as a site to issue awards to famous travellers and explorers. The Directors of the Mine, together with the Małopolska Tourism Development Agency, hold award ceremonies issuing "Kolosy" statutes made from the Mine's salt. In 2000 Leszek Cichy received a Honourary "Kolosy" award for the Everest climb.

When you check out the 'bible' for the Aconcagua climbing (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0898866693/the7summitscom ) you will see a list of 27 routes in ascending difficulty. The last one on the list, the Polish variation of the Sloven route was climbed by Leszek Cichy with Ryszard Kolakowski, late January 1987. "Difficulties of UIAA V+ (YDS 5.8) and ice to 90 degrees were reported, in adition to loose rock. Both cimbers suffered rockfall injuries during this climb."
