Personal bio:

I think climbing offers very different things to different folks. In one of the trip reports on my site (www.diffendal.com) I struggle with why I climb. Once, while sitting atop an easy climb one winter day in the Valley I made the following discovery. For what it’s worth, it’s the best I can figure.

Climbing for me is about spiritual epiphany. I like the mechanics, the challenge, the communion with the outdoors, the camaraderie with other climbers, but all that is not IT. The thing that keeps me climbing where other pastimes have grown boring is that it can generate a moment, a point in time where the Ki becomes absolutely still, where the turmoil of job and relationships, future and past, uncertainty, tension and stress all stop for a minute, all come to a silent agreement to go away, to flow from the self as the tides recede from the beach, leaving smooth flat sand of the soul.
