Additional InfoBesides being the 6th/4th to scale the 7 summits, German doctor Gerhard Schmatz was also the first to complete the project "Seven Islands Seven Tops", that consists of treading the highest summit of each one of the seven greater Earth islands.

The mountains have also brought tragedy to Dr Schmatz. Gerhard and his wife Hannelore already climbed 4 of the 7 summits together when Hannelore did not return from the summit of Everest as she died of exhaustion at 8300m. She would have been the first woman to scale all 7 without a doubt...

On that fatal expedition several records were broken:
- the smallest expedition to summit
- the quickest (32 days)
- the first where every member reached the summit
- the first married couple to summit
