A study of 281 Andean residents in Physiological Reports finds that blood hemoglobin concentration at altitude rises from two separate mechanisms: plasma volume contraction, which begins near 1730 metres, and increased red cell mass, which starts around 2180 metres. The two effects contributed roughly equally to the rise measured at 2600 metres.
