Gripped traces the history of Everest's Kangshung Face, first surveyed in 1921 by Mallory and Bullock, who ruled out climbing it. The first ascent came in 1983 when an American team led by James Morrissey reached the summit on 8 and 9 October, with a second route added in 1988 without bottled oxygen.
