Nevada climber Jim Scott summits Kilimanjaro at 90 years and six months

1 Oct 20265 min read

Jim Scott of Genoa, Nevada reached Uhuru Peak on 28 August 2026, aged 90 years and six months, and is reported by the Reno Gazette Journal as the oldest known person to climb Kilimanjaro. It was the 669th mountain of his climbing life and his second ascent of the peak, 45 years after the first. A few weeks earlier, Dr Art Ulene had climbed the same mountain on his 90th birthday.

Stroke survivor Jayashree Vijay Mohan reports two Guinness records on Kilimanjaro

27 Sept 20265 min read

The Better India reports that Jayashree Vijay Mohan, a Chennai entrepreneur left with left-side paralysis after a stroke in October 2021, climbed Kilimanjaro and set two Guinness World Records. Her first expedition had been an attempt on Everest Base Camp about eighteen months after the stroke. The report, published on 27 September 2026, does not name the two record categories or give the summit date.

Erin Ton sets a women's fastest known time on Kilimanjaro: 5 hours 47 minutes to Uhuru Peak

24 Sept 20265 min read

Erin Ton, a 29-year-old runner from Colorado, climbed Kilimanjaro from Mweka Gate to Uhuru Peak in 5 hours 47 minutes in early September 2026, and completed the round trip in 8 hours 33 minutes. Both times are reported as women's records on the mountain, improving on marks held by Kristina Schou Madsen and Fernanda Maciel. It is the second of the 7 summits where Ton has set a women's speed mark, after Aconcagua earlier this year.

Time on the mountain

31 Jul 20265 min read

Time on the mountain is the single biggest factor in whether a Kilimanjaro climb succeeds, more than fitness, more than gear, more than the season you choose. The old investor's saying goes: time in the market beats timing the market. On Kilimanjaro, the same logic holds. A longer route does not just give your lungs more days to adjust; it changes the whole character of the climb. You stop rushing. You notice things. The altitude that floors a five-day group on summit night is the altitude a seven-day group has already been sleeping at for two nights. This post looks at why the extra days matter, what happens in your body when you give it time, and how to think about route length before you book. It is the first part of our Tips & Tricks series, so it starts at the beginning, with the one decision that shapes everything else.
