Mountaineering boots on Carstensz Pyramid

Also called: High-altitude expedition boots, Mountain boots, Mountain boots (plastic, removable inner), Mountaineering / approach boots, Mountaineering boots (double or triple), Technical high-altitude leather boots (removable liner)

What it is for

Stiff, insulated boots for snow and ice that take crampons. How warm and how stiff they need to be depends on the height and the cold of the mountain: a double or 8000 m boot on the highest peaks.

What Carstensz Pyramid asks for

Standard
The rock and summit day: a light single-layer mountaineering boot (B2–B3 class): waterproof, stiff enough to edge on limestone, sticky rubber, not insulated
The rock, instead of boots: approach or rock shoes, worn a size up over neoprene or waterproof socks: only if you climb well on rock (Alpenglow, Berg)optional

What to look for

Altitude band
How high the boot is made for: trekking, around 4,000 m, around 6,000 m or 8,000 m. Each step up is warmer and stiffer.
Boot class (B0–B3)
How stiff the sole is, which decides the crampons that fit: B0 is not made for crampons, B1 takes strap-on crampons, B2 also semi-automatic ones, and B3 also step-in ones.
