Mountaineering boots on Vinson
Also called: High-altitude expedition boots, Mountain boots, Mountain boots (plastic, removable inner), Mountaineering / approach boots, Mountaineering boots (double or triple), Technical high-altitude leather boots (removable liner)
What it is for
Stiff, insulated boots for snow and ice that take crampons. How warm and how stiff they need to be depends on the height and the cold of the mountain: a double or 8000 m boot on the highest peaks.
What Vinson asks for
Standard
8000 m class: an all-in-one boot with a built-in gaiter, or a double boot with insulated overboots; single boots are not enough, you carry it
What to look for
- Altitude band
- How high the boot is made for: trekking, around 4,000 m, around 6,000 m or 8,000 m. Each step up is warmer and stiffer.
- Boot class (B0–B3)
- How stiff the sole is, which decides the crampons that fit: B0 is not made for crampons, B1 takes strap-on crampons, B2 also semi-automatic ones, and B3 also step-in ones.
