Kilimanjaro National Park allows mountain bikes on one route towards the summit: the Kilema rescue track to Horombo, then the Marangu path to Kibo and a carry to the crater rim. What riding it involves, what the park charges, who has done it, and two easier rides for everyone else.
Yes, you can take a mountain bike up Kilimanjaro. Kilimanjaro National Park allows bikes on one route towards the summit: the Kilema route on the south-east slope. A second ride, across the Shira Plateau, stops well short of the top. Here is what the park's own rules and the people who have ridden it say.
One route to the top, and it is a rescue road
The Kilema route is the park's emergency track: 19 km of four-wheel-drive road from Kilema Gate, at about 1,970 m6,463 ft, to Horombo Hut at 3,720 m12,205 ft. Park vehicles use it to carry supplies up and to bring sick climbers down. From Horombo, riders join the walkers on the Marangu route to Kibo Hut at 4,700 m15,420 ft and the summit.
The park keeps porters off the track. They walk up the Marangu path a day ahead and meet the riders at Horombo, so the climb to Horombo is a day alone with the bike, the guide and the forest.
An expedition with a bike
The track to Horombo and the long, gentle crossing of the Saddle to Kibo Hut are rideable, slowly. The scree above Kibo Hut is not: the bike goes on your back, or on a porter's, up to Gilman's Point at 5,681 m18,638 ft. On the crater rim riders get back on for the stretch past Stella Point to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m19,341 ft.
The descent is why people do it. Published itineraries drop about 4,000 m13,123 ft in two days, with short carries over the rockiest ground below Gilman's Point. One team rode from Kibo Hut to Horombo, several hours on foot, in about 90 minutes. Expect a mountain expedition with a bike, not continuous cycling to the top.
Five days is the usual plan, and six is better
The trips on sale run to five days, the same as the shortest walking climb on the Marangu route. Our guide presents Marangu as a six-day climb, with an extra night at Horombo for acclimatization. The reason holds on a bike too: the altitude is the same. We would ask for that sixth day, and read Altitude and acclimatization before booking.
There is also a timing question to settle with the operator. The park's cycling guidelines allow riding only between 6.30 am and 6 pm, and they set the summit for bike trips between 11 am and 6 pm. The published itineraries still leave Kibo Hut around midnight, on foot, with the bikes carried. Ask which plan your trip follows.
What it costs
The park charges a cycling fee on top of the daily conservation fee every climber pays. In the park tariff that ran to 30 June 2026 it was US$50 per person per day for visitors from outside East Africa. Some operators quote a single "cycling permit" price that is far higher than five days of that fee. Ask what is in it.
People who rode it first
Nicholas and Richard Crane took bicycles to the summit over Christmas 1984 and New Year 1985 and wrote Bicycles Up Kilimanjaro about it. Bikes were later kept out of the park for years, until the park published its cycling guidelines and opened the Kilema route.
On 28 January 2022 the Canadian endurance rider Cory Wallace went from Kilema Gate to Uhuru Peak and back in 8 hours 55 minutes. This autumn the American mountain biker Hannah Otto set out to become the first woman known to ride it from base to summit in a day. She is raising money for bikes through World Bicycle Relief. On 4 November 2026 she did it, and rode the last 3 km on a broken leg after a crash in the forest.
Two easier rides
Most visitors do not need the summit to ride on Kilimanjaro. The Shira Plateau ride is a 44.7 km loop on the western side, run as a day trip, mostly above 3,500 m11,483 ft and with no summit night. Children of 10 and over may ride in the park up to 3,700 m12,139 ft with an adult, so it is also the one for a family.
Below the park the riding needs no permit at all. Day rides from Moshi go through the villages and coffee farms of the lower slopes, and longer trips circle the whole mountain in about nine days. A gentle day ride is a good use of a spare day before a climb.
Choosing a company
Only a few companies sell bike trips inside the park. The Kilimanjaro operators page now shows which ones on this site sell rides on the mountain, which sell rides below it, and which also run safaris. Before booking, ask how much of each day is really rideable and who carries the bike on the summit section. Ask how many days are allowed for acclimatization, what bike and spares come with the trip, and how the descent is guided. A company that has done the trip will answer all of those without hesitating.
