Study links altitude headache to CGRP, the molecule behind migraine
A field study from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich followed volunteers from 450 metres to the Capanna Regina Margherita at 4554 metres and sampled their tear fluid at every stage. The climbers with moderate-to-severe headaches showed a clear rise in CGRP, the neuropeptide at the centre of migraine research. Oxygen saturation did not separate the sufferers from the rest.
