Study links altitude headache to CGRP, the molecule behind migraine

17 Oct 20266 min read

A field study from Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich followed volunteers from 450 metres to the Capanna Regina Margherita at 4554 metres and sampled their tear fluid at every stage. The climbers with moderate-to-severe headaches showed a clear rise in CGRP, the neuropeptide at the centre of migraine research. Oxygen saturation did not separate the sufferers from the rest. Published in Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology.

Study: plasma volume contracts before the body makes extra red cells at altitude

5 Oct 20265 min read

A study of 281 adults living between 970 and 2600 metres in the Colombian Andes reports that roughly half the altitude-related rise in haemoglobin concentration comes from a shrinking plasma volume rather than new haemoglobin. The two responses start at different heights: plasma contraction from about 1730 metres, extra haemoglobin mass from about 2180 metres. Published in Physiological Reports, the work has practical consequences for how anaemia is diagnosed in highland towns.

Kilian Jornet describes losing the ability to form memories high on Everest in 2017

5 Oct 20265 min read

Speaking on Jan Frodeno's Going Mental podcast, Kilian Jornet said a stretch of his 2017 Everest climb is simply gone from his memory. He was above 8,000 metres, without supplementary oxygen, and had gone roughly 30 hours without eating. The account was reported by La Vanguardia and carried by Clarin.
